Speak Easy

Apparently each holiday season OPI makes a few exclusive polishes for Ulta only.  Being new to polish trends this was news to me.  When I saw Speak For Your Elf, one of this year’s Ulta exclusive polishes, I knew I had to add it to my ever growing collection of red polishes.  My Ulta just happens to be in one of the busiest shopping centers during the holiday season.  You take your life into your own hands when shopping there during the Christmas season.  I tend to avoid it until well into mid January.  Fortunately, I had a polish friend who was kind enough to pick up a bottle for me.

speak3

Speak For Your Elf has true red micro glitter with a nearly true red jelly base.  There is so much glitter in this polish it sparkles, but because it is a micro glitter and the jelly base is so smooth it doesn’t have that rough texture of a regular glitter.  The glitter just floats in the base.

  speak2

This polish went on effortlessly and as you can see I wore it for several days.  See the nail growth and tip wear?  I kind of forgot to take pictures of it right away.  It is hard to take pictures when you are constantly staring at your nails.  I loved it so much I wanted to make it last a little longer.  So I added a little decoration so it wouldn’t get stale.

Do you recognize it?  Here is a closer look.

It’s a decal of the kracked kat!  This is where I plug my friend Kristin over at The Manicured Monkey again.  She made these decals for me!  Awesome, right?   She has her own Etsy site called Beading Monkeys where you can purchase a variety of nail decals as well as some beautiful nail polish jewelry. So head on over and check them out!

Pigs in a Blanket

Pigs in a blanket is what I had for lunch today. I thought it would make a fitting title for today’s polish too.
Sometime ago I introduced you to The Right to Bare Feet by Piggy Polish.  Today I am bringing you Strong Like Jazz, an electric purple crème polish that leans towards fuchsia with it’s blue undertones.

piggie6

The formula was nice but went on a little thin.  When it dried it was very flat and dull.  Several coats of Seche Vite shined it right up.

piggie2

I was also applying this in less than idea lighting and missed full coverage with the second coat.  Strong Like Jazz also did not play nice with my basecoat of Sally Hansen Double Duty and wrinkled at the tips even when I wrapped them with polish.

piggie4

piggie5

Strong Like Jazz is a fun color.  Even though I had some issues with the way it dried, due mostly to my basecoat, I will probably wear it again because I honestly like the way it looked on my hands.  It would be a really good layering polish for all the fancy topcoats that are flooding the polish market right now.
Because Strong Like Jazz begged for something to top it off with I tried my hand at full nail stamping.

Glitter in the Air Doppelganger

Do you know what a doppelganger is?  I will stay here listening to Pink's Glitter in the Air while you Google it.

Honestly, I didn't know what doppelganger meant when I read it on one of my friends Facebook posts a while back and had to Google it myself.  Mirriam-Webster defines it as a double or an alter ego.  Today's post is of Deborah Lippmann's Glitter in the Air doppelganger, Revlon's Whimsical.

First let's look at Glitter in the Air.  I don't actually own Glitter in the Air.  (My purse strings are a little tight these days.)  But my lovely friend Kristen over at The Manicured Monkey does own Glitter in the Air.  She was kind enough to share some pictures of it with me for the purpose of this post.

Scrangie, a nail polish blogging icon, describes Glitter in the Air as "a milky, cloudy, gentle baby blue jelly. Very sheer. Sprinkled throughout the blue jelly base are shiny bits of large and small pink and blue glitter."  Revlon's Whimsical is very, very similar.

Whimsical is similar to Glitter in the Air in that it also has a similar milky, baby blue jelly base with pink and blue glitter suspended in it.  The jelly base in Whimsical might be a shade darker than Glitter in the Air.

I applied four heavy coats of Revlon's Whimsical so that the coverage would be opaque for the purpose of this post.  However in the future I will probably layer one or two coats over a base color.  Each coat dried quickly and the blue and pink glitters dispersed over the nail nicely.

The formula of this polish was superb!  I wore this manicure for a week with absolutely no chipping!  On the downside of that was the fact that it took quite a bit more effort to remove.  I even used the foil method to soak off the polish and I still had to work a lot of the glitter off my nails.

If Deborah Lippmann's Glitter in the Air is not within your polish budget Revlon's Whimsical is a very decent substitute.  Only a polish addict like you and me will know the difference!

Wrap It Up Wednesday

2012 is my year to try new things.  That includes trying out new ideas on The Kracked Kat too. I thought it would be nice to give you, my readers and fellow bloggers a place to showcase your hard work because without you my nails would be naked and my cuticles dry.  So I am creating a new regular feature called Wrap It Up Wednesday where I invite all of you polish and beauty bloggers to show off your work.

5 Essential Tools for a Perfect DIY Manicure

55286fd9735r8j9
The “Great Recession” and a depressed economy has made “Do It Yourself” a household term.  As a result the polish industry has seen a huge increase in sales from the regular consumer – you and me.  We are now trying to replicate a salon quality manicure for less on our own.  When doing your own manicure at home it is important to have the correct tools.    So I created a list of 5 Essential Tools for a Perfect DIY Manicure.

1. Nail File
The nail file is probably the most important tool in your manicure arsenal.  There are many different kinds of nail files to choose from such as padded cushion files, mylar, ceramic and my personal favorite, glass. Metal files should be avoided as they can be harsh and can even split nails.  When shopping for a nail file make sure to look for one that is double-sided with a coarse grain for filing and a fine grain side for smoothing. It is also important to make sure the nail file you choose is comfortable to hold.  To keep edges smooth, use a sweeping motion from center to end. Don’t seesaw back and forth!

2. Buffing Block
The Buffing Block is a four sided block used to buff nails, remove ridges and add shine.  Each side of the block has a different grade of coarseness. When using the buffing block make sure to glide the block across the nails using a back and forth motion. The coarsest side of the block can be used to file and shape your nails.  Use the the second coarsest grit to smooth the ridges out of your nails.  The second smoothest side of the block aids in buffing out the imperfections on your nails.  Shine up your nails using the smoothest side of the buffing block.  Make sure not to overdo it as you can weaken the nails, doing more harm that good.

3. Cuticle Oil/Treatment
Keeping your hands and cuticles hydrated is key to extending the life of your manicure. Keep your cuticles looking their best by using a good quality cuticle oil or treatment on a regular basis.  The purpose of cuticle oil is to deeply moisturize not only the cuticle, but also the skin and surrounding nail area. Cuticle oil helps increase circulation in the nail bed and is thought to stimulate nail growth.

4. Cuticle Pusher/Orange Sticks
Cuticle pushers and orangewood sticks are used for pushing the cuticle back from the nail bed.  A cuticle pusher usually refers to the metal variety and the orangewood stick refers to the wooden stick usually made from orangewood.  Working from the middle of the nail, gently push back the cuticle no farther than the skin will allow.  Make sure to loosen the cuticle with cuticle oil or a warm water bath before using either of these tools so as not to cause damage and infection to the cuticle and nail skin.

5. Polish Remover
Nail polish remover is essential to removing polish, oil and dirt from the nails.  All polish removers contain some amount of acetone in them, usually about 60%.  Pure (100%) acetone, although quite effective in quick removal of polish and even acrylic nails, can be damaging to the nail and the surrounding skin.  Remember to wash and thoroughly clean your nails before applying nail polish to rehydrate your hands and nails from the drying effects of the remover.

A salon quality manicure can be had by all by using the correct tools and a little bit of practice.  Listed here are the basics needed for your at home manicure kit.  The more you practice giving yourself at home manicures, you will want to add more tools to your manicure kit.  There is nothing better than pampering yourself and saving a few dollars at the same time.

Put ‘Em Up!

C-C-Courage was one of the first salon brand polishes I bought when my polish obsession got into full swing.  But for some reason I never got around to putting it on until now.

oz4

China Glaze C-C-Courage is from the Wizard of Ohh Ahz collection of 2009.  C-C-Courage  is a purple frost with purple micro glitter and deep blue undertones.  The application was smooth as was the formula. Two coats covered the nail nicely.

oz2

I wore this polish for four days with no chipping or tip wear which is rather surprising considering the amount of glitter in this polish.

oz3
I really don’t have any bad things to say about C-C-Courage except that I just wasn’t that thrilled with the color.  It just didn’t speak to me the way some polishes do.  Maybe it was because there was too much blue in it.  Maybe I am over the whole glitter thing.  Maybe it was a hormone thing.

oz1

I just can’t put my finger on the exact reason I didn’t care for this polish.  Will a wear it again?  Probably not.  Have you ever gotten that “meh” feeling from a polish after putting it on?  I would love to hear your opinions!

Best Christmas Present….EVER!!!

A while back Cult Nails did a very limited release of the highly sought after Unicorn Puke.  A mistake with the lab/bottlers resulted in 275 bottles of the future Clairvoyant to be labeled with the moniker, Unicorn Puke. Their mistake was the nail polish addicts' dream come true.

At the time of the release, my polish fund was depleted and I treasured my sleep too much to get up at Oh-Dark-Thirty to order one bottle of polish.  It just wasn’t meant to be. I was content to see the swatches on the other polish blogs or watch eBay explode in a ridiculous bidding war for a bottle of polish (Shame on you eBay sellers for profiting from someone else’s hard work.).

Another mix up occurred when two bottles of the “Puke” were accidentally mailed to my good friend Rosemary instead of just the one she ordered.  Rosemary contacted Maria of Cult Nails fame and informed her the mistake.  Maria did the unexpected and told Rosemary to keep the polish and pay it forward to someone who might have missed out.

Fast forward to December.  I am participating in a Secret Santa exchange with my online polish group.  2011 had been a rough year for me and my family and the anticipation of receiving my Secret Santa gift in the mail was one of the few things that kept me going this holiday season.

You can imagine my excitement the day the package finally arrived.  As it turns out my Secret Santa was Rosemary Wood.  The package was packed so nicely and the handmade card told me to open the red and green box first.  Packed inside the red and green ornament that doubled as a box was a Cult Nails polish burrito with a tiny Cult Nails sticker that said Unicorn Puke.

100_1617

I finally broke down recently and applied the Unicorn Puke to my nails.  I won’t bore you with all the details of how smooth application was and how much I loved this polish (duh!).  Let’s get right to the pictures…

Holo-Love

Today’s polish is one of the first holographic polishes I purchased.  Now that is not to say it was my first holographic polish in my collection.  It called to me from the shelf.  This is OPI’s Designer Series Extravagance, a pretty berry color flecked with purple and red holographic glitter.

ds2

This was the first time I had ever worn a holographic polish and this polish did not disappoint.  I put on two coats on top of a base coat of L. A. Colors Hardener-Strengthener, as recommended, and topped it with a coat of Seche Vite.  It turned out to be one of my very favorite manicures to date.  I tried to make this manicure last as long as I possibly could but we all know that all good things must come to an end.

ds3

ds1

I cannot say enough nice things about this polish.  I have a couple other OPI Designer Series polishes, old and new, that I still need to try.  If they are anything like DS Extravagance I will swoon!  I found the OPI DS Extravagance polish at my local Ulta Beauty Supply.  These polishes cost a bit more than regular OPI polishes but it is so worth it.  I know you will enjoy this polish as much as I did, and I cannot wait to wear it again.

Seeing Red

I am so thankful to my polish buddies for further enabling my new obsession with red nail polish.  I probably received at least ten new bottles of red polishes this holiday season.  I will try to spread my red polish posts out so this blog doesn’t turn into a “bloody” mess.

wocka2

Today’s manicure is brought to you by The Muppets mini collection by OPI.  This is Wocka Wocka! which is Fozzy Bear’s catch phrase, usually after he tells a bad joke.  This polish is no joke however.  Wocka Wocka! is a pretty red that has a slight magenta hue and a shimmer finish.

Wocka wocka

I am quickly becoming a huge fan of OPI polishes.  They go on so nicely, are long lasting and are removed quite easily.  Wocka Wocka!  was no different.  I wore this shade for several days with minimal tip wear.  Then I dressed it up a little to look like this for the holidays…

Wocka Wocka! is a beautiful polish.  I can’t wait to try the other polishes in The Muppets mini collection by OPI.

This Little Piggy Went to Market

The temperature outside might be freezing but I have The Right to Bare Feet!

piggie 3

Today’s manicure is brought to you by Piggy Polish.  I know you have seen the bottles of Piggy Polish at Ulta.  The cute bottles with the toe ring attached?  My Secret Santa at work got me a few bottles of Piggy Polish for Christmas.  I love when people pick out polish for me.  They always pick colors I normally wouldn’t pick out myself.  The Right to Bare Feet is one of those colors I would pick up, comment on the pretty color and then put it back on the rack without even considering purchasing it.

piggie 2

The Right to Bare Feet is a duochrome polish that flashes bright pink in certain light and transitions to a bright copper.  I decided after putting this on my nails that it will look perfect against my tanned feet this summer, although it is a great year round color.  Can you imagine a pretty fall manicure of leaves stamped on top.

Two even coats covered the nails nicely but one coat may have sufficed.  The formula was quite nice and the polish went on smoothly.  I topped it with a coat of Seche Vite and I was able to wear this for several days with minimal tip wear.

piggie

I really liked this polish.  In application and formula The Right to Bare Feet reminded a lot of the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure polishes I have tried.  I have two more colors to try and if they are anything like this polish I will definitely be purchasing more.

My New Year’s Resolution

My resolution for 2011 was to restart my blog.  Five months later I did just that.  The Kracked Kat wound up taking a whole different direction when I rediscovered nail polish.  Then real life took a firm grip and some of the things I enjoy doing took a back seat, like writing my blog.  My resolution for 2012 is to continue to try fill this blog with new and interesting polish and polish related ideas.

100_1703

I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing what I have learned about nail polish.  I know that 2012 will be filled with many more new and exciting nail polish discoveries.
